The Wonders of Bamboo

Bamboo is a favourite plant of mine, I am amazed at how fast it can grow and the incredible number of uses bamboo can be put to. For that reason it features in my book 20 Amazing Plants & their Practical Uses. Probably my most oft quoted fact about bamboo is that over 1 billion people worldwide live in a house crafted from bamboo, that is roughly 1 in 7 people!

I have just returned from a trip to Asia where I visited both Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma). In the tropics bamboo grows big and fast and it is widely utilised for making all manner of objects, not just houses!

Although in temperate climates you don’t get mammoth diameter bamboos you can still cultivate useable lengths, even when grown in containers to control its spread. Using the plants that easily grow around us for making things leads to a more sustainable, low impact lifestyle. They do it so well in Asia, everything is used, nothing wasted. If the photos I have included in this post are not enough to inspire with what you can do and make with your home grown bamboo grab a copy of 20 Amazing Plants; now available as an ebook.
